2010 Legislative Accomplishments

LAND USE ISSUES

  1. Sustainable Forestry Incentive Act: There was talk of reducing SFIA payments from $7 to $3 an acre as a way to save money. Instead the legislature capped payments at $100,000 to a property owner in a single year. While this solution will impact some large industrial lad owners, small seasonal owners were held harmless. The DNR however, due to budget cuts, has had to begin charging land owners to write Management Plans for owners seeking to qualify for SFIA or 2c classification.
  2. Vacation Home Rental: The resort owners have pushed a scheme with the Department of Health that would require anyone who rented out their cabin or hunting shack for even one night to comply to all the regulations and pay all the fees of a resort. MSRPO suggested compromise language that would have put these restrictions on those who are legitimately in the business of renting cabins while holding the occasional renter harmless. The compromise was rejected and the more restrictive bill put forth. MSRPO lobbied hard against these unreasonable requirements and successfully defeated the measure. There has been no change in the law. Please rent your cabin responsibly, taking special care that your renters do not impact the experience of your neighbors with raucous parties, over-occupancy of facilities and other problems.
